News: The Beautiful American Mind

Child Guidance & Family Solutions of Summit County unveil initiatives to eliminate stigma of mental health care and provide equality of treatment to all individuals, regardless of race, ethnicity or culture.

Akron, OH - 07-09-2007 - The beauty and variety of the American landscape is mirrored in the faces of its citizens. An overview of America presents a diverse tapestry of natural splendor, farms, cities, industries and people who call this place home. The advancements and accomplishments of the nation are testaments to the wondrous and creative mind of mankind.

For centuries, the human mind has been analyzed to better understand its intricacies. Over time, we are learning that the behavioral health of an individual is as important to our overall welfare as is our physical health. Most recently, programs are being initiated to raise awareness of the importance of proper behavioral health and eliminate the stigma of receiving behavioral health care.

Behavioral health care is necessary for many Americans regardless of race, ethnicity, or culture. The rate of mental health disorders is one in every five individuals. Unfortunately, all do not have the same access to available treatment and services. Oftentimes, minorities receive substandard treatment, diagnosed too late or receive no treatment at all.

The stigma associated with receiving behavioral health care is a powerful deterrent to those seeking treatment. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, GA, “Mental disorders are as disabling as cancer or heart disease in terms of premature death and lost productivity.” And yet, “fewer than half of adults get help and only one-third of children (receive treatment).” The tragedy is illuminated by the fact that, “80 to 90 percent of mental disorders are treatable using medication and
other therapies.”

Poverty also plays a strong role in treatment. People who are poor, less educated, and unemployed are more likely to experience depression and less likely to seek treatment for financial reasons. In addition, when individuals do seek treatment, they generally use the emergency room for mental health care and not specialized mental health practitioners.

Experts are also discovering that cultural differences exist between racial and ethnic groups and individuals need to be treated accordingly to the traditions of their culture.

Child Guidance & Family Solutions has remained Summit County’s leading provider of behavioral and mental health care to adults, children and families for close to 70 years. The Agency provides treatment and prevention services to over 4,000 children and 1,000 adults yearly and employs 150 professionals and support staff. Their counselors and care coordinators are also on-site in numerous area school districts and have locations throughout the countywide area.

The staff of Child Guidance & Family Solutions is well aware of the societal obstacles that exist in the Akron community and have been working to tailor their programs to address the specific needs of individuals seeking treatment. Child Guidance & Family Solutions recognizes the importance of community-based care and has created a network of services to reach out to area families and guide individuals on the path to a productive and successful future.
