CONFERENCE GOALS:
To illustrate the collaborative effort in Summit County among the County of Summit ADM Board, Child Guidance & Family Solutions, the Summit County Juvenile Court’s Crossroads Program and the Center for Innovative Practices, in meeting the needs of youth with co-occurring disorders (mental illness and substance/alcohol use) involved in the juvenile justice system.

The conference will provide examples and model a process for collaborative efforts regarding planning, selecting, coordinating, and implementing a multi-system approach to assisting youth and families. In addition, time will be spent assisting participants with identifying the collaborative issues associated with implementing a co-occurring program, lessons learned, and steps to assess local community resources and becoming an informed consumer of potential services.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1. Increased understanding the impact of co-occurring disorders on youth, families, and their communities
2. Increased understanding of each systems characteristics including the collaboration and relationships between and within systems
3. Increased understanding the unique collaborative issues associated with implementing a co-occurring program in your community; lessons learned, steps to assessing local community resources and becoming an informed consumer of potential services

KEYNOTE SPEAKER:
Win Turner, PhD, LADC is a national clinical instructor, supervisor and researcher in Youth and Family Co-occurring Disorders (COD) treatment, as well as program and policy development. He holds the position of Assistant Faculty and the Clinical Director of the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center-Addiction Treatment Program at Dartmouth University.

Dr. Turner’s additional work focus is bringing research into practice throughout the United States. Dr. Turner has participated on expert panels for Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), the New York Times and Robert Wood Johnson (RWJ) to develop educational and briefing documents concerning youth and substance abuse treatment and policy change. Along with Gayle Porter, PhD, he co-authored “Taking Charge” A Guide to Evidence Based Treatment for Youth in a System of Care; a document designed to empower and help inform families when making decisions regarding their treatment options.

Dr. Turner is a principle investigator, consultant and nationally certified trainer for the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) on projects concerning effective or treatment for adolescents Motivational Enhancement Therapy & Cognitive Behavior Therapy. He is also a consultant to the New England Institute of Addiction Studies (NEIAS). In this capacity, he was the lead author on the Youth Treatment Guidelines for the State of Vermont. This treatment guideline outlines the essential aspects of comprehensive treatment for youth and families. The guideline has been adopted by many state agencies across the country to help direct program and policy change.
