News: Untreated Depression Affects Work

Employees with depression, left untreated, costing companies millions

Akron, OH - 06-26-2007 - Behavioral health problems are having a substantial impact in the workplace, with increasing numbers of employees taking time off for depression and stress, according to new research. A study of 30,000 workers found that mental health is now the second largest cause of time lost to sickness absence after muscle-related problems such as bad backs. Depression and stress are often misconceived as “normal” aspects of life, however physical health and bad backs, when left untreated, progressively worsen. To combat this spike in employee mental fatigue, the leading Summit County behavioral health provider, Child Guidance & Family Solutions, offers occupational and group therapy for life change, tension and depression.

The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) said the findings of its report will be “particularly worrying” for the Government in view of the “huge” increase in the number of people with behavioral health problems claiming incapacity benefit.
The poll showed that workers suffering from depression took an average of 30 days off, while stress sufferers were away for 21 days.

Child Guidance & Family Solutions believe in the resilience of the human spirit and explore people’s internal wisdom and personal supports to find solutions to the problems and challenges that come with living in the world today.

Child Guidance & Family Solutions has remained Summit County’s leading provider of behavioral and mental healthcare to adults, children and families for close to 70 years. The Agency provides treatment and prevention services to over 4,000 children and 1,000 adults yearly and employs 150 professionals and support staff. Their counselors and care coordinators are also on-site in numerous area school districts. For more information please call (330) 762-0591 or visit www.cgfs.org.
