Making strides in school counseling and learning environments

Child Guidance & Family Solutions is continuously improving programs for school-aged children while increasing support for them in the schools. Recently we have made major strides in providing solutions in the schools for children suffering from mental, social and behavioral challenges. Ms. Renee P. Tereshawty is our new full-time therapist and case manager for the Akron Opportunity Center in North Hill. In her position she counsels and supports children with:

• Individual counseling
• Crisis support
• Teaching life skills to help with daily success
• Communications and support to parents
• Referral of students and family to community resources
• Consultation with your child and his or her teacher.

Previously, children with behavioral challenges were hesitant to ask for help because of the stigma and the environment surrounding such troubles. We work with teachers, counselors and parents to create an atmosphere that encourages children to ask for help in dealing with difficult issues and let them know who they can go to for help. We encourage students to tell a teacher or counselor if they notice a friend or classmate dealing with emotional, mental or behavioral difficulties.

Thank you to all our staff who are making a difference in the lives of children in our community!
