Millions of Americans who seek help each year are facing both substance use and mental heath issues. This is known as having a Co-occurring Disorder, and it is why we explore the presence of both substance use disorders and mental health problems with all individuals seeking counseling.
At Child Guidance & Family Solutions our Integrated Co-occurring Treatment plan addresses the special needs of people with co-occurring disorders. Following your child’s initial assessment, if a substance use issue also exists, our staff will determine the best course of treatment. In some instances a referral to another agency will be appropriate.
If your child and your family are suffering from co-occurring issues, you should know that you are not alone. According to recent studies, one in four children in the U.S. is affected by a family member’s substance abuse. These families include all ethnic groups and economic levels, and live in urban, suburban and rural communities.
You should also know that children in families affected by alcohol abuse are at increased risk for physical illness and injury, emotional disturbances, educational deficits, behavioral problems and alcoholism or alcohol abuse in later life. CG&FS can help you act now to prevent current problems from worsening and new problems from occurring down the road.
Heart-breaking statistics
According to recent mental health studies:
• 43% of adolescents receiving mental health services also struggle with substance abuse.
• 62% of adolescent males and 82% of adolescent females entering substance treatment have significant emotional and psychiatric disorders.
• Nearly 2/3 of incarcerated youth with substance use disorders have at least one mental health disorder.
• As many as 50% of substance abusing juvenile offenders have ADHD. Youth with COD are at risk for truancy, poor performance, drop-out or behavioral problems that result in school suspension and expulsion.
