Adjustment Issues

Adjusting to new and often unanticipated events is part of life, and for the most part, people accommodate these changes without suffering undue stress or hardship.

Sometimes, though, particularly stressful events can overwhelm us. For example, starting a new school or grade or learning to live with a step-parent can be more stressful than you realize for a child. For adults, losing a job or an important relationship can bring about tremendous challenges. Even the build-up of many smaller stresses can lead to feelings of helplessness and hopelessness.

Fortunately, Child Guidance & Family Solutions staff are professionally trained to help individuals, couples, parents and families cope with difficult life adjustment issues. Explore the individual links to the left to discover how we can help with specific conditions.

Symptoms of adjustment problems

Children who are unsuccessfully trying to adjust to a life-changing event may exhibit new behavioral problems or have trouble expressing feelings. Old behaviors also may re-emerge, signaling that the child is struggling.

For adults, there may be a feeling of stress, anxiety or even hopelessness. Sometimes the normal ways of coping or finding solutions to life’s problems just don’t work.
