School Issues

Do you worry that your child is not doing well academically for no apparent reason? Disruptive behavior in the classroom, problems with friends, emotional detachment and moodiness could all be symptoms of a child struggling with emotional, social and/or behavioral challenges. At times, struggles with the experience of trauma in a young person’s life may also show up in school work and behavior at school. Drug and/or alcohol use can lead to difficulties and are sometimes overlooked as possible causes for problems at school.

Often the reasons for children's problems are complex. We sometimes simplify these by labeling the child as "bad". This leads to many children not receiving sufficient help or treatment for serious social, emotional and/or behavioral challenges.

We understand that family and teachers are the most important influence in a child's life. As such, it is important that we partner with you and with your child’s teacher(s) to understand what has led to the difficulties your child is experiencing. This understanding often leads to a better understanding of helpful ways to motivate and communicate with your child both at home and in the classroom. This, in turn, can lead to a more positive and successful school experience.

Child Guidance & Family Solutions' partners with many area schools. Staff assigned to these schools include professional therapists who provide individual counseling to children, consultation to teachers and advice to parents regarding how you can encourage and support your child at school. If your child is emotionally troubled in some way, we will help you understand this and work with you to improve your family life and your child’s experience of school. Care coordinators also work with teachers and others in the schools. Their focus is on helping students learn effective ways to manage their behavior in the classroom, learn positive group interaction skills, and to make sure that efforts at home, school and at our agency are effective and coordinated.

You are the expert on your child. Changes in behavior or attitude about school, increased absences, or attempts to stay at home may be a signal of an emerging problem. Withdrawal from friends, more than the normal tiredness, difficulties concentrating, a loss of interest in formerly pleasurable activities, unexplained persistent anger . . . any of these may be signs that your child’s coping resources are running out. We can help you learn more about this and develop proven, effective solutions. The probability of success is so much greater when families, schools, and behavioral health professionals work consistently and well together. Our approach is unique. Let us show you how this can work.
