Respite / Residential

The Respite Program was developed to support the severely emotionally disturbed child in the community so that out-of-home placement can be avoided. It is for clients ages 6 through 17 years, not in the custody of Summit County Children’s Services. Respite provides a break, for both the child and the family, thus enabling them to become refreshed so they can continue to manage living together. Children are scheduled to stay at the respite home for 1 to 3 days. During this stay, children continue to attend their school and activities, and can call home daily. Hospitalization and residential placement have been avoided in the majority of the situations where the Respite Program was utilized.

The Respite homes are provided through a contract with Shelter Care, Inc., a private, non-profit social service agency. Shelter Care provides these homes to be used exclusively for Child Guidance & Family Solutions’ clients. The homes are licensed by the Ohio Department of Mental Health and supervised by a Qualified Mental Health Professional. Each home is staffed by a married couple that initially receives twenty hours of training. Shelter Care’s counselors provide close on-site supervision.
