Incredible Years®

Incredible Years®

The Incredible Years® program is designed for children from birth to 8 years of age and their parents or guardians. The award-winning parent, teacher, and child social skills training programs, developed by Carolyn Webster-Stratton, help ensure that parents and infants form strong bonds, help parents learn and practice parenting skills and also helps toddlers and preschoolers with early onset conduct problems.

This program helps with:

  • Aggressiveness
  • On-going tantrums
  • Acting out behaviors such as whining, yelling, hitting, kicking, swearing, refusing to follow rules
  • Difficulty interacting with others
  • At-risk of removal/expulsion from a child care center or school
  • Hyperactivity, impulsivity
  • Inattention, unable to focus

The Approach

Toddlers and preschoolers learn about making new friends and learning rules, understanding and detecting feelings, problem-solving, how to be friendly, how to talk with friends and how to do your best in school.

The Approach Details

There are four basic parenting programs that target key developmental stages: IY Baby Program (0-8 months); IY Toddler Basic Program (1-3 years); IY Preschool Basic (3-6 years); IY School Age Basic (6-8 years). In addition there are three associated parent programs: Advance Program, which focuses on parent interpersonal problems such as depression and anger management, Attentive Parenting Prevention Program, and the School Readiness Program.

Children and parents/caregivers meet separately in small supportive group settings.

Toddlers and preschoolers learn about making new friends and learning rules, understanding and detecting feelings, problem-solving, how to be friendly, how to talk with friends and how to do your best in school. CG&FS staff help to build these skills with the help of the Incredible Years® team of colorful characters: Detective Wally, Molly Manners, Tiny Turtle and Dina Dinosaur.

The parent/caregiver group runs concurrently with the children’s groups. CG&FS behavior specialists educate parents on preventing and dealing with difficult behaviors in young children during these group sessions.

Expectant parents and parents of infants learn about infant safety, how to read infant cues, how to stimulate infant learning and how to create a strong bond with their baby.

Parents of preschoolers are provided with effective tools and techniques to improve social, emotional and academic competence of their toddlers. The group setting also allows for parents to share their experiences with each other.

The Incredible Years® program can be implemented by CG&FS in childcare centers, preschools, and primary schools. CG&FS staff will provide training and support to help teachers strengthen classroom management skills, promote pro-social behavior and school readiness, and reduce classroom aggression and non-compliance.
